Chapter 3 - Telemachus With Nestor



Summary: (Charlotte)

Telemachus arives in Pylos in order to speak to Nestor to get information to see what happened to his father. They are invited to a feast where Nestor tells the story of Agammemnon and Aegisthus. Nestor gives Telemachus advice and warning on what to do next. He tells him not to stay away too long, because the suitors may sleal his things, and to visit Menelaus to hear his story.

Major Themes: (Jourdan)

of Telemachus: (pg.27) Telemachus is nervous about aproaching Nestor, the tamer of the horses. He is worried that his lack of intelligence will not appear to Nestor, and that he will make a fool out of himself. Athene has to push him to be more confident, and assure him that she will help him when needed.( pg.30) Telemachus gets enough courage to ask Nestor about his father. Nestor even compliments Telemachus on how much he sounds like his father.

Hospitality: (pg.28) When Athene and Telemachus walked in on the people of Pylod and Nestor preparing for the banquet, every one stopped what they were doing yo greet them. They even let Athene hold the beaker and pray first.(pg.36) He even offers Telemachus and Athene to sleep at his home. Athene declines but Telemachus accept.

Homeric Simile: (pg.31) When Nestor is describing the tale of Odysseus, he refers his bad luck to the luck of Agamemnon, and how Telemachus can relate to Orestes. He must be brave like him.

Disguise:(pg.37) When Athene leaves she changes into a vulture.

.Briefly explain the story of Agamemnon (Caroline)

Agamemnon was Menelaus' brother, and fought in the Trojan war to recapture Menelaus'. After the Trojan War when Agamemnon had returned to his country, his wife Clymnestra's lover Aegisthus murdered him and seized control of the country. Then Agamemnon and Clymnestra's son, Orestes, avenged his father's death by killing Aegisthus, all whilst Menelaus was collecting riches to bring back to his palace.


What warning/advice does Nestor give to Telemachus? (Caroline)


Nestor advises Telemachus to visit Menelaus because Menelaus was one of the ships that were with Nestor and Odysseus' ships as they returned from Troy.

Athene turns into a vulture.
